Letter to the Editor: Can’t afford pool bond

— To the editor:

I understand that we will be offered an opportunity to subsidize a bond issue by the Northern Wasco County Parks and Recreation District for a new pool facility. We already subsidized the Design LLC (Google) facility for the next 15 years. Were you offered a subsidy by the city or the county to expand anything you were doing?

Design LLC was offered a golden ticket to this town by the less than adequate “negotiating” team. We will subsidize the construction of their facilities and whatever number of employees they deign to hire. The real nasty side of the agreement is the number of temporary, not full-time, no benefits and no seniority jobs that will come to exist under this agreement. These employees are exactly what Design LLC was looking for in the first place: low skill, low expectations and willing to take slightly above poverty wages.

We cannot afford to subsidize this pool bond issue. Real wages have not gone up in this town. Real prices for things like food have. The board of Northern Wasco County Parks and Recreation District should ask Mr. and Mrs. Google to pony up their share. We are in the new gilded age, after all, noblesse oblige.
