Letter to the Editor: Pool a safe place to play

— A safe place to play

To the editor:

I know that right now many people are deciding whether or not to vote for a new community pool. As people make this decision I would like to share how much the pool has meant to me while growing up in The Dalles.

During many past summers I participated in summer swim team at the pool.

This gave me the opportunity to be on a team with many kids I remain friends with today. I would get up at six for morning swim practice and swim through the morning. These early mornings practices graced me with many of the best summer memories I have. I learned how to get up early and work hard. The pool has also provided me with my first work experience. I have worked the past three summers as a lifeguard at the pool. I have had the opportunity to work with some great people many of whom I met during my days on swim team. Three summers of working at the pool has taught me many lessons about responsibility and dealing with people. As the people are deciding to vote for the pool, I ask that they keep in mind what the pool means for kids in our community like me.

A community pool not only provides kids a safe place to swim and burn off some of their energy, it also keeps kids out of trouble and provides them with valuable life skills and lifelong friends.
