Locals swing it out at MC Amateurs

Noel Smith swept past the field with a low gross tally of 149 and edged out Mark Matthews by one stroke in the ‘A’ flight to claim top honors at this past weekend’s 74th annual Mid-Columbia Amateur Golf Tournament at The Dalles Country Club.

Matthews ended up with a 150 for his try and wound up five shots better than Dave Garwood and Jeff Lines, who each tallied a 155. Gary Mariani finished fourth with his 158.

Also in the ‘A’ flight, Pat Martin had the low net score of 142, and he was four strokes better than Les Bryan (146).

Dan Telles had a 147 for third place, and Craig Pearce churned out a 149 for fourth.

In the ‘B’ flight class, Bill Caddy stormed the scene with his 155 to chalk up first place, as he took an early lead and never looked back.

Doug LaMear had a 164 for second place, Mike Frink tacked on a 165 for third and the duo of Phil Foote and Bob Twiss each carded a 166 for a fourth-place deadlock.

Owen Smith won the low net round in the ‘B’ flight with a 144, inching ahead of Dan Alford (145). Jason Alford and Ron Krol each tallied a 147 for a third-place tie.

Manny Patel won the ‘C’ flight low gross score match with his 163, a mark that put him 11 shots better than the next competitor, Bruce Harris, another local golfer.

Harris ended up tied with Barney Michieli with a 174, and Bill Maske placed fourth at 176.

In the ‘C’ flight, Jim Ferrer had a low net score of 144, and Roger Fleck notched a 146 for second place.

Gary Bronkey swung out a 148 and Fred Stampflee chalked up fourth place with his 150 doing the honors.

George Adams maneuvered his way to a 177 to snatch first place in the ‘D’ flight low gross division, one stroke better than Pete Barber, whose 178 was good enough to earn second place.

Terry Wray (182) and Bob Smith (183) rounded out the low gross standings.

On the low net side, Ed Wicks garnered a 141 for top recognition, two better than Richie Hess, who tabbed a 143.

Jerry Christensen had a 151 for third place, and Tim Urness capped the field with his 153.
