GARDENING LESSON: The final DIG summer gardening lesson of the season will be this Saturday, Sept. 7, at 9 a.m., at The Dalles Imagination Garden next to Google and the Riverfront Trail. The featured speaker is Wasco County Master Gardener Jens Frederickson talking on green manure ground covers.
The event will also feature coffee and a morning snack, a chance to tour the garden, and learn a gardening technique.

STEAK FEED: The Kiwanis Steak Feed takes place Thursday, Sept. 5, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Sorosis Park in The Dalles. The annual event is The Dalles Kiwanis Club’s major fundraiser for community projects, most of which serve children and youth. Adult meals include a 10-ounce ribeye steak, baked potato, coleslaw, roll, dessert and drink for $15. Free meal for children 12 and under features a hot dog plus the other entrees. Tickets are available from Kiwanis members or may
be purchased in the park Sept. 5.

VETERAN TOOLS: Google is inviting veterans to a training Friday, Sept. 6, on Free Google Tools for Veterans. The event runs from 4 to 6 p.m. at The Dalles Civic Auditorium, 323 E. Fourth St.
The presentation focuses on tools designed to help veterans and their families transition into civilian life. Refreshments will be served following the training.

CLASS OF 1966: The Dalles High School Class of 1966 will celebrate its 65th birthday with a class birthday party Saturday, Sept. 7, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Spooky’s Pizza in The Dalles. Alumni and faculty are invited. There is no registration fee. Event will include social time, raffles and birthday cake for all, plus a chance to visit the school museum inside the Wahtonka High School building between 10 a.m. at 3 p.m. that day.
A class walk is planned Sunday, Sept. 8, at 8:30 a.m., starting at the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center. Last minute plans include an informal gathering Friday, Sept. 6, at 6 p.m. at Spooky’s, as well.

BOOK SALE: The Dalles Friends of Library Book Sale Blow Out will be Saturday, Sept 7, from 9 a.m. to noon at 722 Court St., at the Book Barn behind the library. Books will be available by the bagful. From 9 to 10 a.m. $3 bag, 10 to 11 a.m. $2 bag, 11 a.m. to noon $1 bag. Proceeds aid the library and their programs. Help support Literacy.

ANNUAL MEETING: The Dalles Friends of the Library Annual Meeting will be Wednesday, Sept. 11, at 7 p.m. in the library meeting room. Refreshments will be served. Everyone is welcome.
BENEFIT CONCERT: Hit Machine will play Friday, Sept. 20, at Clock Tower Ales to support the United Way of the Columbia Gorge. Our local United Way helps fund agencies such as Haven, Meals-on-Wheels and CASA. Doors open at 5 p.m. and the band starts at 7 p.m. 21 years and older. Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door and are available at Clock Tower Ales, The Dalles Fitness Club and Klindt’s.
CONSTITUTION SEMINAR: The Coalition for an Educated Electorate will host a Constitution Seminar with the Wall Builders and Tim Barton Saturday, Sept. 28, from 1 to 3 p.m. Introduction will be by historian John Brennan of Hood River. Seminar speaker will be Oregon Rep. Dennis Richardson from U-Choose.

WHITEWATER RAFTING: The 2013-2014 Sense of Place lecture series will kick off with a place-based lecture on the scenic White Salmon River, Sunday, Sept. 29, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Join a guided whitewater rafting trip on the White Salmon River and learn about the process of removing the Condit Dam from some of the key players involved with the project. Plus, enjoy light fare and refreshments at the end of the float. http://gorgeown

DAM TOURS: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will offer tours of The Dalles Dam this summer, every Saturday and Sunday at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Tours will end the last weekend of September.

ZUMBA PROGRAM: Northern Wasco County Parks and Recreation along with Licensed Zumba Instructor’s Marsha Morrison and Brenda Green are offering Zumba to the community at the Muscle and Fitness Center, 915 Garrison St., Mondays at 9 a.m., Tuesdays 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., and Thursdays 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Drop-in fee is $5. SOIL TESTING: OSU Wasco County Master Gardeners now offer soil testing every week through October 2013. Garden soil will be tested for nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, pH, humus, and texture.
