Dallesport Fire dept. has need
To the editor:
The Dallesport Fire Department needs help. They need an additional garage for their fire trucks. The water trucks and the quick response fire trucks are presently parked outside. They will need to be drained for winter and that limits fire and rescue missions to our communities.
I am amazed at the number of responses they make (206 responses with 67 to The Dalles). About 18 unpaid volunteers drop what they are doing and race to answer 911 calls. Their quick response saves lives and property. They attack fires and give emergency medical care. They stop fires before they spread too far and give CPR to save others. I know, because I am a volunteer firefighter, too. They suffer from smoke inhalation and tiredness, but they give their time as unpaid fire and rescue people.
They need a six-bay garage at a cost of $550,000 or $175,000 for materials for volunteers to build it. They have had several fundraisers, but have a long way to go to raise enough money to meet the need.
Donations may go to Chief Rhett Howard at Dallesport Storage or to me at PO Box 469, Dallesport, WA 98617 or call 541-993-9321.
