Letter to the editor: Honoring fallen

Michael Spencer, son of Mark and Sharon Spencer of Moro, is taking part in the Never Quit Challenge (

Mike is a 21-year member of the United States Coast Guard as an Aviation Rescue Swimmer now stationed in Mobile, Alabama. Six teams, representing all branches of the military and disabled veterans, are riding jet skis from the Florida Keys, Florida to New York City. They left Sept. 6 and are destined to arrive in New York City on Sept.11, a distance of 1,600 miles.

Each jet ski represents different Fallen Heros and is manned by active servicemen and disabled veterans. They will stop once a day at predetermined ports to meet with prospective donors who will give to help support programs for disabled veterans.

Mike is Team Lead for the Guardian team which includes two disabled veterans.

Mike is a graduate of Sherman High School, class of 1992. He is married with two children. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross for Extraordinary Heroism in Aerial Flight on Dec. 3, 2007, for being instrumental in the rescue of 39 people trapped by flood waters in Chehalis, Wash.
