Letter to the Editor: Garden help

To the editor:

People people people, hear ye, hear ye, hear ye, I need your help. I want to build a Garden for the Oregon Veterans Home. I have the permission of the director of the OVH, C. Maitland and the cooperation of the Oregon State Representative there to proceed. I want to build a vegetable garden with fruit trees, flowers, shrubs, a sidewalk for wheelchairs and a gazebo.

A local doctor suggested a “chicken coop.”

Well the first thing I need is a list of volunteers to show to Salem.

Salem has the authority to say yes or no and they are going to want to see this idea can fly. I have contacted the Master Gardeners at the college and they have pledged their support. So far I have five volunteers including myself, but I need more.

We will need top soil, concrete, an extention to the water spigot, and a “master” plan. So don’t be shy, call me and volunteer. Let’s show the veterans of our city we really appreciate the sacrifices they have made for us. It is very special to know that they have been willing to give their lives for our freedoms.

Great idea! I once started a 600 sq ft organic garden for a nursing home. It gave the residents fresh vegetables and flowers and they enjoyed walking or wheel chairing around it. If we move to your area, we will help. Sorry we can't say yet, but your idea is great and it will be very rewarding! We will find you if we move there.
