The Dalles To the editor:
So is this how it is always going to be — or worse? One mass shooting after another?
Columbine High School; Virginia Tech; Sandy Hook Elementary; Ft. Hood Texas; Tucson, Ariz.; Aurora, Colo.; Sikh Temple, Wisconsin and most recently the U.S. Naval Yard in Washington, D.C.
And these are just the tip of the iceberg, some of the most famous. Check it out, there are so many more. Be ready to weep.
Of all guns sold, 65 percent are semi-automatics. More guns with more killing power. And do you feel safer? There is no safe place —not in our schools, our churches, our shopping centers, our theaters, restaurants, our military establishments. It’s an epidemic of violence — the mass killings, the daily gun violence throughout our society.
I agree that guns are not the only problem; it goes so much deeper into the fabric of our culture. But we must also change the gun laws.
What will it take? Many more millions of people must decide that enough is enough and take action. Get involved. Contact one of these organizations: Americans for Responsible Solutions (Gabby Gifford’s group); Mayors Against Illegal Guns; Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. Call the President and your lawmakers.
We can and must change our society...we owe it to our children. Or are we willing to settle for being the most violent of the industrialized, “developed” nations?
