CONDON — Cottonwood Canyon State Park, along the John Day River on Highway 206 between Condon and Wasco, will open for the first time Saturday, Sept. 28. The roughly 8,000 acre park includes a small, primitive campground, picnic area, and trails.
State park staff will lead inaugural 2-mile nature hikes Saturday, Sept. 28, and Sunday, Sept. 29, starting at 9 a.m. Fishing and birding demonstrations are also scheduled for both days at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. The park will be open all year, and daytime visits are free. The 21-site main campground is first-come, first-served and has running water, vault-style restrooms, but no showers. Regular campsites are $9 a night from May through September, then $5 a night October through April.
