Letter to the Editor: Consider citizens, not just Google

— Consider citizens

To the editor:

I would like you to consider the following as you develop an agreement with Google for the abatement of their property taxes proposed for the next several years:

All the funds they are proposing to give to the city and county be used by these taxing authorities to offset their property tax levies during this period of time. This will give their citizens some, maybe small, tax break. I feel the proposed idea of giving funds to various agencies escapes the normal budgetary process used to develop operating budgets.

Secondly, I would like you to require Google to submit an audit performed by an independent auditor, which gives the following: the position, salary and whether this position is contracted or an employee of Google for the jobs they will be required to fill under their agreement with the city and county.

I hope you will give consideration to these suggestions, because what you are considering is a huge financial break for a company that has already received one of the largest tax breaks given to a company in Oregon. Isn’t it time you give some consideration to your citizens who deal with one of the highest property tax rates in Oregon.
