Letter to the Editor: Basic geography

— Location error

To the editor:

The letter titled, “Miracles here” in the March 24 edition looked interesting. For one thing, it seemed to be pushing the 400 word limit. However, it was the mention of telescopes in the first paragraph, that caught my attention.

I waded through the letter until I came to a statement that the Palomar Observatory is located on Mt. Wilson. Palomar Observatory is located on Mt. Palomar, in the San Diego back country. Mt. Wilson is located about three hours north, in the Angels National Forest.

The California Institute of Technology, (CalTech) built, owns and operates the Palomar Observatory. CalTech is in Pasadena, Calif., south west of Mt. Wilson. Perhaps that is the source of the letter writer’s confusion. In any case, I felt that if there was a problem with basic geography, there might be problems with other areas of the letter, and chose to not wade on through to the end. For those of you who did, I hope the letter was interesting.
