Katherine Shaffer, Brett Lane and the doubles team of Elvia Rubio and Hollee Kaseberg came away with wins, but the Sherman tennis team was edged out by Stanfield 4-3 in 4A/3A/2A/1A league tennis action Tuesday afternoon in Stanfield.
Shaffer inched ahead in her No. 3 single pro-set match with an 8-4 winner over Nicole Hood, and at No. 1 boys’ singles, Lane, powered past Hank Gerhke by an 8-4 margin.
Also in doubles action, the No. 1 girl’s duo of Rubio and Kaseberg slipped past their Stanfield foes in a closely contested slugfest, 9-8.
The Huskies nearly left Stanfield with a team win, but Karolyn Kaseberg lost in three to Gati Chavez.
In the opening set, Kaseberg got off to a hot start with a 6-1 win, but Chavez evened the match at 1-apiece by a 6-4 score. Chavez eventually won the match by a 6-3 score in the finale.
Meghan Belshe lost her No. 1 singles match 6-2, 6-4, and Garak Casper lost to Gerhke 8-3 in a pro-set matchup.
“We learned a lot about the importance of mental toughness and areas we need to improve upon,” said Husky coach Kali Rolfe. “We will be making adjustments to our game plan to match opponents’ play. We had some great victories. I am very proud of my team. They played some long matches and showed growth and determination.”
Sherman travels to Umatilla for another stiff test at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
