The final criteria The Dalles High School Mascot Committee will review, according to the latest North Wasco County School District 21 announcement, will be the overall “appeal” of the remaining mascot choices as votes continue to be gathered.
The final five mascot options The Dalles High School and Middle School students presented earlier this month are the Riverhawks, the Rattlers, the Rapids, the Current and Sasquatch.
These five were evaluated by the committee, which is composed of student leaders from both the middle and high schools as well as coaches, teachers and one school board representative.
The categories against which each of these were measured included uniqueness, how reflective they were of the larger community as well as their overall ability to inspire school spirit.
High school and middle school students and teachers were given the opportunity to vote on their preferred mascots last week, and now the committee is moving on to consider community opinion on the matter.
With the help of his students, district technology teacher Lynn Ewing recorded the demonstrations so community members “have the opportunity to view the concepts designed by students.”
Interested parties may visit the school district’s website at www.nwas
co.k12.or.us and click on “the scrolling announcement for links to the video recording and an online survey where community members can cast their votes for the high school mascot.”
“The High School Mascot Committee,” the announcement stated, “will review all of the results of the latest polls and combine that with information from the other criteria in order to form a final recommendation to the school board.”
The poll will remain open until Thursday, Apr. 17 at 12 p.m.
