New judge takes seat in federal court in Eugene

EUGENE (AP) — Oregon’s newest federal judge was officially installed in a ceremony Monday at the Courthouse in Eugene.

Michael McShane was appointed by President Barack Obama and confirmed last year by the Senate. He was previously a judge for Multnomah County Circuit Court.

The Register-Guard reports Sens. Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley and Congressman Peter DeFazio spoke before the judge was administered the oath of office.

On Wednesday, McShane will hear arguments in a case involving Oregon’s ban on same-sex marriages. McShane could strike down the ban and allow same-sex marriages to begin immediately in Oregon.
