TD, Mosier students in state spelling bee

Sonja Jacobsen of The Dalles and Skyler Reid of Mosier will be representing Wasco County this year at the Oregon Statewide Spelling Championship.

The event takes place once again at the Oregon State Fair in Salem from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30 in the Hart of the Garden.

This is the sixth year Oregon Spellers, an all-volunteer group, has sponsored the championship. The group formed in 2009 in response to the Oregon Department of Education’s budget-driven decision to eliminate the state-level spelling contest after 33 years.

Debra Gil, from KPTV’s Good Day Oregon, will be emceeing the Division II and III of the Spelling Championship for the third year.

Oregon Spellers is also hosting The Bee at the Fair, which is a verbal contest open to all Oregon State Fair patrons “just for the fun of it.”

The Junior Division Verbal Bee, ages 12 and under, will start at 2 p.m. and the Teen/Adult Division Bee will begin at 3p.m. on the stage in the Jackson-Long Building.

Oregon Spellers is funded solely by donations. For more information, visit the Oregon Spellers’ website at
