Chamber rolls out ‘Cherry MARVELous’ theme

“Cherry MARVELous” will be the theme of the 35th annual Northwest Cherry Festival, The Dalles Area Chamber of Commerce has announced.

The idea behind the theme is a creative mash-up between cherries and super hero comics —celebrating old traditions with a new twist.

“We want to remind everyone that Cherry Festival is the celebration of the cherry bud-blossom, which is truly the sign of the harvest that is yet to come,” said Lisa Farquharson, CEO of Chamber. “This year let’s come together as a strong community and celebrate with our growers…and have some fun to.“

This year the Chamber is holding a Cherry Festival art contest inviting all artists, young and old, and all those in between to enter their best drawing or graphic for a chance to feature their art at the 35th Northwest Cherry Festival. The submission deadline for the art contest is Feb. 17 at 5 p.m. Applications must be submitted to the Chamber office. Contestants interested in joining the competition should stop by the Chamber office to pick up an application.

The submissions for the contest will be on display at the Chamber from Feb. 18 through Feb. 28. The Chamber will announce the winner Feb. 24. The winner will receive a $150 cash prize as well as placement of artwork on all T-shirts, and publicity items created for the 35th Northwest Cherry Festival.

Selection will be based on appeal, content, creativity and reproducibility as a graphic image. The winner will also be highlighted at Chamber’s festival booth to sign T-shirts on April 26.

Additionally, the Chamber will be hosting a Lip Sync contest April 26. The Chamber encourages school groups, youth groups, families, theater groups, and others to enter. The entry fee is $25, which must be received by Friday, April 18 with a completed entry form.

Cash prizes are donated to the charity, school or organization of the winner’s choice. Entries will not be judged solely on the merit of actual lip-syncing, but on the costumes, makeup, props and audience response.

The Open Air Vendor Market will be revamped with new look and feel for the 2014 festival.

“We are looking to see all of you at the 35th Annual Northwest Cherry Festival,” Farquharson said.

The Chamber is also accepting sponsorships for the event. For a sheet with all the information regarding sponsoring the Cherry Festival, email or stop by the Chamber office.

The Chamber is also accepting applications for the Cherry Festival Parade. For any information and festival submission and entry forms on the Cherry Festival please contact The Dalles Chamber of Commerce.
