Scam targets PUD customers

Northern Wasco County PUD is warning customers of telephone scams targeting local customers over the last week. The customers are reporting that they have received a phone call stating that their power service will be shut off unless they pay an amount either by wiring the money from Walmart or Rite-Aid or by paying by credit card.

One customer was told that they needed to pay a $350 deposit because their meter was using too much energy and could cause a fire. The customers contacted Northern Wasco County PUD and were told not to give out any information and to report the incident to local police.

We always advise our customers to never give out credit card and bank account information or cash to someone who poses as a PUD Representative. Northern Wasco County PUD employees carry PUD identification. If in doubt, get the individual’s name and immediately call the Northern Wasco County PUD Office at (541) 296-2226.
