Sinfonietta features Scandinavian Romance Feb. 14

Special for Valentine’s Day, the Columbia Gorge Sinfonietta he orchestra is presenting an evening of music called “Scandinavian Romance,” and it features compositions by Jean Sibelius, Oskar Bohme, and Georg Philipp Telemann.

The concerts, Friday, Feb. 14, at The Dalles Civic Auditorium at 7 p.m., and Sunday, Feb. 16, at 2 p.m. at Wy’east Middle School, include Telemann’s “Merry” Suite for strings, a tuneful Baroque suite of dances. Brian McFadden, the band and choral director at Wy’east Middle School, will be featured soloist in the virtuoso trumpet showcase, Oskar Bohme’s “Concerto in F minor,” one of the most popular 19th century concertos for trumpet.

Concluding the program will be Jean Sibelius’ monumental and beloved “Symphony No. 2,” one of the biggest and most challenging pieces the local orchestra has ever played.

“The symphony covers a lot of emotional ground,” said director and conductor Mark Steighner. “It has elements of mystery, sadness, joy and stirring melodies that have become almost a patriotic symbol of the composer’s native Finland. It is a piece that slowly reveals layers upon layers of meaning and musical genius.”

There is a suggested $10 donation for the performances.
