Guzman, Poirier lead Huskies

The Sherman Huskies secured the district No. 2 seed after using a strong first half to roll past Horizon Christian by a 39-22 count Friday in Big Sky conference girl’s basketball play in Hood River.

“(The) girls started off with a little more pep in their step than the night before, especially with their pressure defense which created some transition points and good looks at the basket,” said Sherman coach Steve Kaseberg.

The Huskies had their shooting touch early on with a 13-3 tally starting momentum. This trend continued in the second and third quarters, as Sherman posted rallies of 9-6 and 11-6 to lead 33-15 with one quarter left to play.

Janet Guzman led all scorers with 15 points, and senior center Katie Poirier tacked on 12.

“Our perimeter players did a good job looking into our post players in our set offenses,” Kaseberg added. “Overall, the girls executed the game plan fairly well.”

Sherman (14-9 overall, 5-3 league) will next week in Hermiston.
