Dalles police warn of Phone scam

The Dalles Police Department has issued a warning about two different scams involving MoneyPak greendot cards. These Paypal account cards can be purchased at most grocery and department stores and loaded with money for purchases on the internet.

The suspects in the two cases of theft that have occurred in the local area are calling residents with some sort of an excuse, such as a lottery win or back taxes owing, and requesting that they purchase the cards and load them with money. The person is then asked to call the “official” with the identification number of the card.

The suspects then use that number to transfer funds to their own accounts.

Chief Jay Waterbury is asking people to be suspicious of calls about a lottery you did not enter or anything similar.

And never give personal bank or credit card information over the phone.
