TD to become wrestling Mecca

The Dalles Wahtonka wrestling will be breaking new ground for the 2013-2014 campaign.

And the new territory involves bringing a fever pitch for wrestling supremacy to the masses in the Greater Columbia Gorge area.

Brand new for 2014, The Dalles Wahtonka High School Wrestling Team will be hosting its first home wrestling tournament since 2008 this Saturday starting at 11 a.m.

This year’s tournament will see four teams making their way to Kurtz Gymnasium to take on the Eagle Indians.

The Team Tournament format differs from traditional wrestling tournaments that run individual wrestler brackets.

In a round robin team tournament, teams will face off with each other and scoring is done as a combined point total for each team.

The team with the highest number of wins will be declared the winning team.

Madison, Franklin, Milwaukee and perennial power house Pendleton High School will be in attendance at this year’s meet.

The Eagle Indian grapplers have shown their strength lies in the upper weight divisions and looks to continue to dominate at these matchups on Saturday.

Led by seniors CV Regalado at 220 pounds (11-3 record), Eric Morales at 182 pounds (20-8 record), and sophomore sensation Joe Linebarger at 195 pounds (22-8 record) the Eagle Indian wrestlers look to be competitive with each of this weekend’s teams.

Some other up-and-coming grapplers include Samuel Tyler (113), Cole Davis (120), Izaac Tapia (138), Luis Herrera (145), Mitchell Waters (152), Colton Lee (160) and Daniel Madrigal (160) to name a few.

With three of the four schools residing in the Eagle Indians Regional District, match ups will be critical as they will help determine district seeding for wrestlers.

Two mats will be in operation for the team tournament as well as a third mat hosting JV wrestlers.

The meet will conclude at approximately 3 p.m.
