Project ELFF tops last years collections

Project ELFF topped last year’s collection of food for local food banks by almost 600 units in 2013 under its new commander, volunteer firefighter Cheyenne Heron, collecting a grand total of 27,466 units of food.

The door-to-door food collection event took place over a three-day period starting Dec. 3, divided into east and west The Dalles on the first two days and Dallesport on the third. About 1,633 ELFF collectors with 28 drivers helped with the canned food drive, covering 607 miles. This year’s overall food and cash collected has yielded the following number of food units:

The Dalles: 16,092 (7,466 eastside and 7,255 westside)

Dallesport: 2,436

Safeway: 1,954

The Dalles Middle School: 1,356

Dry Hollow Elementary: 1,352

Colonel Wright Elementary: 448

Cash donations ($957): 3,828

In past years, the average collection generated about 21,000 to 23,000 units of food. The 2013 goal was 25,000 units, which was surpassed by more than 2,000 units.

A total of almost 40 businesses, service clubs and schools helped make the event possible.

Mid-Columbia Fire and Rescue, The Salvation Army and St. Vincent de Paul extended their thanks to all those who volunteered their time and energy, and donated food and cash to help those in need.
