SWC hits skids against Ione

The Ione Cardinals broke open a 12-6 halftime cushion with runs of 10-2 and 15-13 to defeat South Wasco County 37-21 in girl’s basketball play Friday in Ione.

With a six-point lead entering the third quarter, the Cardinals were able to create all the distance they would need with a 10-2 spurt to make it 22-8.

The Redsides nearly doubled their point total in the fourth frame with 13 points, but Ione tallied 15 points to stay ahead.

Kyra Shannon led the Redsides with seven points, and Zoe Morelli added six.

“Our defense was pretty solid for most of the game, but we could not find ways to score,” said SWC head coach Ron Townsend. “We shot the ball terribly, highlighted by a 1 for 12 from the free throw line.”

SWC (5-8 overall, 1-2 league) hosted Condon Saturday. At 6 p.m. Friday in Maupin, they take on Arlington.
