To the editor:
I just read Dan Hansen’s letter in Sunday’s paper about changing the high school mascot. Isn’t it enough District 12 took over District 9 with a hostile takeover?
They smoothed the feathers of the Eagle for a little while, calling it The Dalles Wahtonka. It soon became The Dalles High only. Wahtonka is history, except for the people who remember when District 12 had no place for District 9 kids and built that school.
Couldn’t they leave the Eagles alone and that much dignity? Some of the name choices are pitiful. The Eagle is a majestic bird.
Getting rid of it flies in the face of all the people who know the history.
Editors note: The school remains officially "The Dalles Wahtonka," with plans in place to change the name to "The Dalles High School" when a new mascot is selected and adopted.
