Carjacking fails for lack of gasoline

AUBURN, Wash. (AP) — If you’re looking for a vehicle to carjack, it’s probably best to avoid the ones already stopped along a major highway.

The Washington State Patrol says a man tried to carjack a truck that had run out of gas along State Highway 18 in south King County.

Troopers say the would-be carjacker threatened to shoot the vehicle’s owner, who was napping early Tuesday morning while waiting for help from a family member. The owner got out, ran and called 911.

As Sgt. Jason Hicks puts it, threats “did not influence the truck’s fuel-starved engine.” It sputtered to a stop after about 50 yards.

The carjacker started walking toward the owner but troopers arrived and arrested him.

Hicks says 22-year-old Mason Eubanks of Sultan was arrested for investigation of robbery and vehicle theft.
