Fourth of July: Coming attractions

Independence Day activities in The Dalles are only the opening act of a month full of summer fun.

Fort Dalles Days gets under way Thursday, July 11, kicking off with a chili cook-off at the historic Mint Building.

Jammin’ July Street Fest, Saturday, July 12, from 5 to 10 p.m., in downtown The Dalles is the main event for the first weekend of the 10-day celebration, bookended by the big Fort Dalles Days Pro Rodeo, July 17 to 19 at the Milt Tumilson Arena.

Events are being organized throughout The Dalles by a host of different groups. The common denominator is history, but the fun is widespread, varied and sure to appeal to a broad spectrum of interests.

From history talks and museums to music old and new, heel-kicking rodeo action and pioneer games, Fort Dalles Days offers a knee-slapping good time.

Don’t miss The Chronicle’s special Fort Dalles Days section, in the July 10 paper, featuring a full schedule of events and spotlighting some of the people creating fun for all.
