Letter to the editor: Heartbreaking

To the editor:

In January, Department of Homeland Security solicited bids for vendor contracts to handle 65,000 unaccompanied alien children. The Advertisement for Bid, excerpted: “Escort Services for Unaccompanied Alien Children, Solicitation Number: BERKS-RFI, Department of Homeland Security, Immigration & Customs Enforcement, ICE-OAQ-DM, Washington, District of Columbia, U.S. …The Contractor shall provide unarmed escort staff, including management, supervision, manpower, training, certifications, licenses, drug testing, equipment, and supplies necessary to provide on-demand escort services for non-criminal/non-delinquent UAC ages infant to 17 years of age, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Transport will be required… approximately 65,000 UAC… 25% local ground transport, 25% ICE charter and 50% commercial air...”

The influx of unaccompanied children on the Texas border was no surprise. We are a nation of immigrants, a nation of law and the border is not secure. My heart breaks for these children. Someone has some explaining to do.
