Letter to the editor: What’s happened?

To the editor:

What is happening to our state and nation? Forest fires so terrible and why? Well, we have not taken care of our resources. We had to protect the spotted owl, we couldn’t cut down our trees. We lost most of our lumber mills. Can’t have clear cuts, can’t even clear out the diseased trees.

And now so many homes are burned to the ground. We had the scenic area preserved which meant many restrictions. Property owners had to plant trees in front of their homes because you were not supposed to see homes built along this Columbia River. How terrible is that? The trees along the river now are so thick that traveling to Portland, you seldom can see the river. And oh, we can’t thin the forests. Timber is now imported. We have to wake up and be allowed to live and work and have jobs. We are not allowed to use burn barrels because of pollution. We have lost so much of our industry.

All for preservation. And now we have the problems with trains—coal trains in the gorge!!!! And oil traveling this sacred river. Well, there just might be accidents!! Well how many accidents do we have on our roads? Coal trains are not so terrible. We have an abundance of coal and I grew up in Wyoming and we all lived through the use of coal. We visited a coal plant and watched the fact that there was no pollution coming from the plant, just electricity taking care of thousands of people.

Oil is needed as many of our resources, and other countries seem to be doing fine —most of our clothing is not made in America and we are importing what we should be producing. Preservation is the theme and saving the animals like the coyotes and other wild — life killing off our ranches livestock.

The scenic act was to be such a wonder and thousands of tourists were going to be our salvation. Well, the county was left with big bills to pay for the Discovery Center. Friends of the Gorge are loving the scenic area and all their hikes and preservations that property owners lost out of.

We have so many rules and regulations and higher taxes and now we are importing young people to our states, without their parents!

What happened to our great America? What happened to our history and our constitution? God gave us America and it is falling apart. What can we do? We need to study and teach our background to our youth. Will we pass on the land of the free and home of the brave?
