To the editor:
Regarding Patricia Griffith’s letter published June 1, 2014, I agree with the content and spirit of the letter. It would also be worth considering the amounts that are donated by the wealthy to worthwhile efforts, such as the Schnitzer Concert Hall, OPB, Salvation Army and so on. It would be interesting to know how much is donated by the wealthy as a percentage of all donations. Do they spread some of the wealth around?
Huge salaries do seem unconscionable. Greed drives the United States economy, and whether that is right or wrong, those achieving success for stockholders are usually rewarded for those efforts in relation to the success. So is it right or wrong? Or is this simply indicative of the structure of economy? As usual, the article does not explore all aspects of this issue.
