Temperatures above normal in May

Temperatures at The Dalles airport averaged slightly warmer than normal during May, according to preliminary data received by NOAA’s National Weather Service in Pendleton.

The average temperature was 62 degrees, 1 degree above normal. High temperatures averaged 75.1 degrees, 1.4 degrees above normal. The highest was 90 degrees on the 14th. Low temperatures averaged 49 degrees, 0.6 degrees above normal. The lowest was 39 degrees, on the 5th.

Precipitation totaled 0.36 inches during May, 0.20 inches below normal. Measurable precipitation — at least .01 inch — was received on six days with the heaviest, 0.15 inches reported on the 8th.

Precipitation this year has reached 7.83 inches, 1.40 inches above normal. Since October, the water year precipitation at The Dalles airport has been 10.72 inches, which is 1.24 inches below normal.

The highest wind gust was 43 mph on the 9th.

The outlook for June from NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center calls for above normal temperatures and near to below normal precipitation. Normal highs for The Dalles airport rise from 77.0 degrees at the start of June to 84.0 degrees at the end of June. Normal lows rise from 52.0 degrees to 57.0 degrees. The 30-year normal precipitation is 0.43 inches.
