FARM ART: The Dalles Art Center presents Farm Animals for its June exhibit. An opening reception is set for Thursday, June 5, from 5 to 7 p.m. The exhibit features the artwork of Anthony Kiser, Diana McElheran, Lettie Young, Kay Skov and Linda Swindle. COURTHOUSE MOVES: “Six Moves and Seven Locations” is the title of a program at the Original Wasco County Courthouse Saturday, June 7, at 1:30 p.m. The program will document the moves of the 1859 building from its original site where The Dalles City Hall now stands to its present location at 410 W. 2nd Place, behind the Chamber of Commerce. A brief annual meeting of the Original Courthouse Preservation Corp. precedes the program.

Refreshments will be served after the program along with a chance to tour the jail, sheriff’s office, and courtroom that served the largest county in Oregon history. Hours for the 2014 summer season are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays during the three summer months. Admission is free. There will be additional open hours during docking times for the 2014 cruise ship season.

BUTTERFLY RELEASE: The sixth annual Community Memorial Butterfly Release is planned for June in three Columbia Gorge locations.

This year’s event will feature painted lady butterflies.

The first event will be Saturday, June 7, at 10 a.m. at Sorosis Park in The Dalles. The same day, butterflies will also be released at 2 p.m. at Jackson Park in Hood River. On Saturday, June 14, at 11 a.m., Rock Cove in Stevenson will be the site of the third release.

This free memorial of healing is for anyone in the community who is grieving a loss or wishes to honor the memory of a loved one.

GORGE-US GALS: The Gorge-Us Gals Ride in The Dalles, a benefit for HAVEN, is set for June 8. Registration $60 per person. The registration fee helps survivors of domestic and sexual violence, stalking and dating violence.

PASTA DINNER: Columbia Gorge Discovery Center presents the June history dinner on “Building the Columbia River Highway: They Said It Couldn’t Be Done” with author Peg Willis, Friday June, 13.

A pasta bar dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. followed by a 6:30 p.m. presentation at the Discovery Center, 5000 Discovery Drive, in The Dalles. Reservations are required by June 11, by calling 541-296-8600 ext. 200.

June 14

BOOK SALE: The Dalles Friends of Library book sale blow-out is set for Saturday, June 14, from 9 a.m. to noon at 722 Court St. in the Book Barn behind the library. Books by the bag will be $3 per bag from 9 to 10 a.m., $2 from 10 to 11, and $1 from 11 to noon. Proceeds aid the library and its community programs.

June 17

ART CAMP: Registration is open for Summer Art Camp at The Dalles Art Center. Classes will run from June 17 to Aug. 7 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Art Camp is not only a fun way to add to a child’s summer, it also encourages creativity and builds friendships.

SUMMER READING: Fizz Boom Read is the theme of the summer reading program at The Dalles-Wasco County Public Library. Toddler (18 months to 3 years) story time is every Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. Preschool (3 to 6 years) story time is every Friday at 10:30 a.m.

Two school-age summer reading programs are planned, Junior Mad Scientists for first through third grades, from June 17 to Aug. 19, at 11 a.m., and Spark a Reaction in the Mad Scientist Club, for fourth through eighth grades, Thursdays, from June 19 to Aug. 29, at 11 a.m.

COOK OFF: The Historic Mint Building and Fort Dalles Days Steering Committee announces the 1st Annual Chili Cook-Off and Benefit sponsored by The Mint. The highlight of this event, which will be Friday, July 11, from 6 to 10 p.m. in the Historic Mint Building, 710 East 2nd Street, is that all proceeds will benefit Providence Hospice of the Gorge, Children’s Grief Groups.

CLASS REUNION: The Wahtonka High School class of 1994 will host a reunion this summer that is open to anyone who attended Wahtonka in the 1990s. The will take place on August 16, at the Hood River Elks Lodge. There will be a dinner and a nineties themed dance party. Tickets are available online at reunion.monicamgarcia.com for either that dance ($15) or the dinner ($20) or both. Tickets will be for sale until the deadline of May 31.

WOMEN’S CYCLING: Bicycle rides for women of all abilities are forming up Thursday evenings at 5:30 p.m. at the new Dalles City Cyclery, 121 E. Second St., The Dalles.

AFS EXCHANGE: Become a global family by hosting an AFS Intercultural Programs high school student this school year. Welcome an AFS Exchange Student from one of 90 countries. Families and individuals are accepted year-round.

Local AFS Volunteers will support families and their hosted student throughout the experience to help both receive the most from their time together.

WEEKLY RUN: The Dalles Young Professionals hosts a weekly 5K run from Clock Tower Ales. The run happens each Tuesday starting at 5:30 pm. All skill levels and ages are welcome. SOIL TESTING: OSU Extension Service Master Gardeners are now offering soil testing, which will continue weekly until October. Garden soil will be tested for nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, pH, humus and texture. Cost is $25 per sample.

BINGO THURSDAY: The Dalles Meals on Wheels, Inc. has bingo every Thursday night starting at 6 p.m. at 1112 W. 9th St., The Dalles. Minimum buy-in is $8 and players could win between $750 to $1,000 on the pink card game. The Dalles Meals on Wheels has been serving seniors for over 40 years both in their homes and at the congregate mealsite. Bingo is our major fund raiser and makes up about 35 percent of the budget.

SUPPORT PROGRAM: The National Family Caregiver Support Program has respite funding available. Are you caring for an adult 60 years of age or older?

Are you at least 55 or older and raising a grandchild or grandchildren? Respite, a temporary break from caregiving duties, can make a world of difference in helping family caregivers.

EXERCISE PROGRAM: There are three components to exercise, stretching, strength training, and aerobics. The Oregon State Extension service sponsors three Strong People programs in The Dalles and Mosier that will address the strength training and stretching portion. Classes are approximately one hour in length twice a week. Columbia Gorge Community College Auditorium, noon Mondays and Wednesdays. VOLUNTEERS WANTED: Volunteers are needed to knit, crochet shawls and lap robes for cancer patients. Yarn and patterns will be provided. Call Betty at 541-980-0774.

GENEALOGY MEETS: The Columbia Gorge Genealogical Society meets the second Saturday of each month at the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center. The public and guests are welcome. A no-host lunch starts at noon in the Basalt Cafe.
