New bereavement group makes three

Heart of Hospice is starting a second Hood River bereavement group for adults.

Grief support groups are often portrayed as being depressing, boring, or too much to bear. In fact, support groups strive to be dynamic, supportive, and informative.

Heart of Hospice offers three bereavement groups for adults.

Two are in Hood River: an ongoing group held Tuesday mornings at Down Manor, and its newest group, in conjunction with Hawks Ridge Assisted Living, scheduled Thursday afternoons. A third group is held at the Springs at Mill Creek Monday afternoons in The Dalles.

These grief support groups are open to all adult members in the community who are grieving the death of a loved one. Even if the participant’s loved one was not served by Heart of Hospice, they are welcome to the support of this service.

These weekly groups are led by Deb Lambo, MA, LMHC, a trained geriatric mental health specialist and director of bereavement services for Heart of Hospice. Bereavement support brings various people together who have had the common experience of loss.

“Grief groups need not be depressing,” Lambo said. “Participants can share with others their situation, feelings, memories, or concerns, and have them received and validated in a safe way. This helps individuals to realize not only that they are not alone, but there are ways through the pain and sorrow. “

As a trained facilitator, Lambo assures that emotional safety is maintained, makes sure all attendees have enough time to speak if desired, and offers support. She also provides information regarding the grief process and other suggestions or resources to help group members with what they are experiencing.
