The Dalles To the editor:
We are fortunate in The Dalles to have a paved path along the Columbia River that can be used for bike riding. It’s beautiful, quiet, and big enough to share with walkers and the like. But there is something very vital that is missing in this town. Where are the bike racks?
It’s true that Safeway and Fred Meyer and a few other businesses have small ones that you can at least lock your wheel to, but bike racks downtown are hard to come by. I’ve found myself frustrated on numerous occasions while riding through town to shop and do errands because I have no safe place to lock my bike.
So instead I will find a pole, staircase, railing, anything that I can fit a U-lock onto. But by doing this, I am making it unsafe for pedestrians by having my bike in the way and taking the risk of having my bike cut off by the property owners or the city. Then to add to the frustration, I have to walk blocks to get to where I’m going. I don’t feel this makes sense for a town to promote healthy living and recreation but then not support a safe way for residents to secure their bike. I think that installing bike racks downtown and in other parts of town would send the right message; that The Dalles is a place that welcomes and supports bike riding.
