Her grandfathers, Frank Eugene Smith and James Browning Jones, were pioneers in the area and her parents Loyd and Weltha Smith lived on the family farm east of Mayville. Viola was a graduate of Wheeler High School in Fossil, Oregon College of Education in Monmouth and Oregon State College in Corvallis, receiving teaching degrees from both colleges. She taught at Eddyville, Mayville and Fossil. She married Morris Sept. 17, 1939. They have been married 74 years. After marrying, they moved to Kinzua Pine Mill, where he was employed. In 1943, they returned to the Smith family farm and raised cattle until retirement, when they moved to Condon. They have three children, seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
