Letter to the Editor: Beyond irritated

— Irritated

To the editor:

The letter from the Mosier gentleman who told The Dalles residents to deal with tie plant odor (when he lives in an area unaffected by the smell of creosote) made me irritated.

However, Ms. Jones’ rebuttal to Miss Barajas’ (an 11 year old girl) made me feel angry.

I believe Ms. Jones’ letter was judgmental, unkind, and full of assumptions. I admire Miss Barajas for writing a letter to the editor; I believe it shows the quality of her character, and kudos to her for showing this kind of initiative at such a young age. I was born in the 70s, and I “pulled my weight” at home by cooking, cleaning, and keeping up with my schoolwork. However, at 11 years old, I still had an abundance of free time to spend as I chose.

I also realize being 11 years old is much different today than it was in 1987, and providing outlets to keep preteens and teens out of trouble is of great importance to the future of our society.

Miss Barajas is just showing concern for the youth of our city, a concern which I wholeheartedly share. Our town needs citizens who support our youth without passing judgment.
