The Dalles To the editor:
I’m totally in favor of the plans for a gala fireworks display and celebration on Independence Day.
I’d just like to ask the powers that be consider calling it an “Independence Day” event instead of “Fourth of July” or “the Fourth.”
It seems we’re forgetting the reason for the celebration — marking the time when our Founding Fathers declared to the King of England that they wanted to be free and independent from England. We don’t call Christmas Day the “Twenty-Fifth of December” or Halloween the “Thirty-First of October.”
Perhaps returning to calling it Independence Day will prompt us to actually remember that momentous first step in the creation of our country. As for me, I wish everyone I meet a Happy Independence Day. Thank you.
