To the editor:
Election day will be here soon and I want to urge all veterans to step up and vote for the re-election of Rod Runyon as Wasco County Commissioner. He not only does everything in his official capacity to honor and care for all of us who have gone to war, his off time is spent standing a flag line as a member of the Patriot Guard Riders.
Mr. Runyon is present at every patriotic ceremony that takes place in The Dalles and escorts the bodies of fallen warriors home and to be laid to rest. During those services, he stands guard to shield grieving families from protesters.
Most recently, Mr. Runyon brought a group of state and federal officials to The Dalles to see how we ran programs here to benefit veterans. What he did not tell these individuals was that he has manned the reception desk at the Wasco County Veterans’ Service Office and had been instrumental in helping several local veteran organizations get programs up and running to benefit military families.
I have been able to see Mr. Runyon in action and he walks his talk. He has deep and abiding respect for those who have worn the uniform of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard. Let’s salute him by helping him get another four years in an office where he has helped stabilize the budget, fought for federal dollars to maintain roads and, first and foremost, honored the men and women who have given us the freedoms to make those choices.
