To the editor:
Recently, I had the privilege of helping pass out “poppies” for people to wear to show support and honor to those who have or are now serving our nation (particularly those of the United States Military).
Please note that those “poppies” are made by the Disabled American Veterans as a fundraiser, purchased by (in our case) the Veterans of Foreign Wars and freely given out to show our appreciation for those who have done or are doing their duty. Also please note that any donations received are only expended on behalf of veterans and their families.
I was very pleased to meet many veterans and their families and many who would have served our country, but for one good reason or another were not able to do so. I have a high respect for them also.
I was very disappointed to see so many young families with their children who do not seem to have the slightest idea of the sacrifice made by many others that these “poppies” represent so that we may live comfortable lives.
I fear that may not be so. I sincerely hope I’m wrong.
