Noon ceremony at Kelly Viewpoint

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2471 and Auxiliary will lay wreaths at the Veterans Memorial on Kelly Viewpoint at noon Monday, May 26.

“We are going to keep it simple this year because there is a dedication for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Highway at the Oregon Veterans Home a short time later,” said Vandee Mauser, president of the auxiliary.

She said community members are invited to attend the annual service at the monument erected by the Mid-Columbia Veterans Memorial Committee. The memorial honors the more than 700,000 men and women who have died overseas in one of America’s wars.

Rod Runyon, Northwest Oregon District captain for the Patriot Guard Riders, will form a flagline and the colors will be posted by Boy Scout Troops 395 and 398. Vocalist Moriah Monagon will open the program with the National Anthem and soldiers from Alpha Company with the Oregon National Guard will close with a rifle salute before Josiah Christmas plays Taps.

During the past year, Mauser and auxiliary volunteer Pat Lucas have affixed markers on the headstone of each veteran at two independent Order of Odd Fellows’ cemeteries in Waco County.

The yellow decals make is easier for boy scouts to post flags on the graves of those who have served.
