Student scholarships announced at awards night

Scores of students were applauded for their hard work and commitment to their education at the The Dalles High School annual Senior Awards Ceremony on May 20.

Two $500 scholarships were awarded to two local students. The scholarships were provided by the North Wasco Education Support Professionals (NWESP) union of classified employees of the North Wasco School District 21.

Hannah Hinshaw, a current TDHS senior, received the first $500 scholarship. According to The Dalles High officials, she is active in gymnastics as well as Relay for Life and works with Haven.

A member of National Honor Society, Hinshaw has completed over 400 hours of community service and was chosen as Distinguished Young Woman of 2013 by The Dalles City Council. She plans to pursue a business degree at Oregon State University in Corvallis next year. Hinshaw is the daughter of Joe and Tina Hinshaw of The Dalles.

Mikaela Hernandez, a former high school student who is now completing her first year at Columbia Gorge Community College, was the second $500 scholarship recipient.

She continues to be active as a volunteer assistant coach for the special olympics swimming team.

Hernandez said she is majoring in biology and plans to attend Oregon State University and eventually work in the science or medical field. She is the daughter of Diana and Rafael Hernandez of The Dalles.
