In conjunction with the new bilingual Smithsonian exhibit “Bittersweet Harvest,” a taco bar lunch will be available for $14.95 in the Basalt Rock Café from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The exhibit “Bittersweet Harvest: The Bracero Program 1942-1964” offers the history of what eventually became the largest guest worker program in U.S. history.
The braceros saved American agriculture during the war years. Yet to this day, those hundreds of thousands of men are given little recognition.
The Braceros program gave farmers much-needed workers, provided braceros with social and economic opportunities and increased the nation's ability to wage war. But it also brought suffering and exploitation.
The exhibit provides photographic images as well as oral histories, and is presented in Spanish as well as English.
