The Dalles seniors Griffin Martin and Ethan Semlor were able to grab a pair of wins to advance to the doubles quarterfinals, but lost in straight sets in the next round and were eliminated by an 8-4 score in the consolation rounds at the two-day Class 5A Special District 1 tennis championships ending Saturday in Sunriver.
All of TD’s other singles and doubles teams lost in two straight matches and did not advance to the second day.
For first-year head coach Shea MacNab, the Riverhawks took a big step forward in terms of roster numbers and individual performances.
In the final week of the season, The Dalles had 15 on the roster, with nine underclassmen.
With players like William Coy, Alex Lopez Daniel Santillan, Jesus Barajas, Pedro Lopez, Brandon Bustamante and newcomer, Omar Rodriguez, the building blocks are in place.
“To see their development and their dedication, they are the guys who are still on the court after practice,” MacNab said. “They are new to the game, but they love the game and that has been a lot of fun. Because that’s our program, that’s the future of our program is those guys.”
