Community members and motorcyclists are invited to provide residents of the Oregon Veterans’ Home with a social outings Saturday and provide some of their “wish list” items.
“This event is a meet and greet and open to everyone, whether they ride or not,” said Rod Runyon, Northwest District captain for the Patriot Guard Riders, which is hosting the Aug. 13 event.
The home is located at 700 Veterans Drive and the open house takes place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“People can just drop in at any time and stay as long as they are inspired to do so – it’s a come and go event,” said Runyon.
He has encouraged bikers from across both Oregon and Washington to “make this a stop on a day ride with honor.”
“It’s always a lot of fun,” he said of organizing the visits for the past nine years.
Runyon said many area residents have not yet visited the state’s first veterans’ home and Saturday is a good time for them to take a tour.
“There’s a cantina and people can come by and have lunch or dessert and see this facility that’s right in our back yard,” he said.
Many PGR members are veterans, said Runyon, and they always enjoy the opportunity to chat with residents from their branch of the military.
He said residents who are mobile enjoy being outside looking at the bikes. People who can’t or don’t want to be outside can check out a motorcycle displayed in the lobby.
Runyon said people wanting to help take care of the residents are invited to drop off something from this list that OVH staffers have compiled:
• Individually packaged chips, crackers, cookies and candy
•Soft-boxed snacks like Little Debbie and cinnamon rolls
•Bottled water, non-alcoholic beer and soda, both regular and diet
•Flavored creamers for coffee
•Small ringed pocket-sized note pads
•New electric razors
•Remote control cars and DVD players
•Hygiene items, such as Poligrip, Polident and Gold Bond healing lotion
•“Forever” postage stamps.
•Generic Light 100’s cigarettes
•Sweat pants and shirts for both men and women in large and extra-large sizes and for men in small through 4XL sizes.
