Brewing Up Business

Although state and federal license requirements held up the opening of the tasting room at Freebridge Brewing by a couple of months, the tap finally started flowing Saturday night at The Mint building, 710 E. Second Street. The celebration drew more than 100 community members and local government leaders, including Mayor Steve Lawrence, shown to the left of co-owner Laurie Light, who is holding the large scissors for the official ribbon cutting. Her husband, Steve, is standing to Laurie’s right, next to U.S. Rep. Greg Walden, who helped the Lights cut through red tape of a bureaucratic kind. “It’s a value-added agricultural product so it’s important for me to do quality control,” said Walden during a brief speech at the event. Lawrence said the opening of a new business that would draw tourists and visitors alike was just the start of what is going to be a big year for economic development.
