At the Hood River Aquatic Center, The Dalles Swim Team showed its overall skill and grit with solid finishes from Natalie Varland, Andrew Clifford, Molly Nelson and Peter Cardosi leading both the boys and girls to ninth place team outputs.
Varland picked up The Dalles’ lone victory of the day in the 100-yard Breaststroke, touching the wall in a brisk one minute and 18.84 seconds, besting her closest opponent, La Grande’s Abbey Tweten, by more than two seconds (1:21.59).
Varland tacked on a sixth-place effort in the 200-yard Intermediate Medley with her time of 2:48.34.
Nelson was second in the 100-yard Backstroke with a mark of 1:11.91, and the junior took fifth place in the 200-yard Intermediate Medley in a time of 2:45.33.
In the girls’ 200-yard Freestyle, Jaeden Biehn tallied 12th place in 2:46.34, Emily Noasco added a 2:59.82 and Emily Peterson had a 3:03.78.
Maya Hernandez chalked up 15th place in the 100-yard Freestyle event with her mark of 1:12.16, and she added a 1:31.28 for 16th place in the 100-yard Backstroke.
Molly Daggett earned 21st place in the 100-yard Breastroke with her finals mark of 1:49.44, and in the 50-yard Freestyle, Paige McLeod (36.78), Samantha Beall (37.50) and Ryaan Walker (55.53) added solid marks.
The girls’ 200-yard Medley Relay team of Nelson, Varland, Peterson and Hernandez scored 28 points for the Riverhawks after securing fifth place in 2:24.50.
Nelson, Hernandez, Peterson and Varland also teamed up in the girls’ 200-yard Freestyle Relay event with a finals time of 2:09.37, just a shade behind La Salle (2:07.46).
Those times gave TD 130 points for ninth place out of the 10 teams competing.
Pendleton (402), Hood River Valley (368), La Grande (291), Baker (188) and La Salle (173) rounded out the top-5 teams.
On the boys side, Clifford tallied third place in the 200-yard Freestyle in 1:57.54 and tacked on fourth place in the 100-yard Breastroke with a time of 1:12.06
The boys’ 200-yard Freestyle Relay team of Clifford, Jordan McGuirk, Cardosi and Izaac Tapia had a finals time of 1:52.75 to earn 10th place.
Cardosi was good for 15th place in the 100-yard Backstroke with a time of 1:19.41, and in the same event McGuirk placed 19th in 1:27.50.
Caleb Wild timed out at 1:14.28 in the 100-yard Freestyle, his best outcome.
Tapia tallied a 1:14.56, Rowan Hopkins had a mark of 1:22.84 and Jony Nelson capped the 100-yard Freestyle with his 1:23.31.
Dawson Hoffman placed 30th with a 1:07.50 in the 100-yard Freestyle, Cardosi was 25th in the 50-yard Freestyle with a 28.91 and Corey Cameron had a time of 2:44.59 for 20th place in the 200-yard Freestyle.
Just like the girls, TD’s boys placed ninth with 69 points, ahead of Baker (63).
La Grande won the event with 571 points, and Pendleton (397), La Salle (218), Madras (201) and Hood River Valley (181) rounded out the top-5 teams.
TD heads to Madras for another meet at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
