Four years ago a group of men from Calvary Baptist Church in The Dalles took a new pastor candidate trap shooting to get to know him better.
The church hired that man—Jeremiah Porter—and the event turned into an annual tradition.
This year’s trap shoot is Saturday at 9:30 a.m. on Rob and Becky Carnahan’s property at 81272 Dufur Valley Rd.
Men who wish to participate are asked to bring their own shotgun, ammo and clay pigeons.
However, equipment will be available for anyone who doesn’t own a gun.
Coffee, pastries and lunch will also be provided.
A friendly competition will take place between guys to see who has the best shot.
“We’re trying to witness to The Dalles area and get guys together,” event organizer Dennis Eiesland said. “New guys come and start going to Calvary or other churches.”
The event has grown from around 25 men in its first year to 85 last winter.
Eiesland said about half of the group are members of Calvary Baptist.
Contact Eiesland at 509-310-9010 for more information.
A women’s trap shoot started last year and will take place next month. The date has yet to be determined.
