Easter Egg Scramble for youth at Sorosis Saturday

A couple thousand kids, age 10 and under, are expected to take over Sorosis Park Saturday at 11 a.m. for the 15th annual Griffith Motors Easter Egg Scramble.

At the east end of the park near the pavilion, children will be split into five different roped off areas by age group—1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8 and 9-10—with the youngest, who may be accompanied by an adult, hunting first.

After just a few minutes, the next group will go.

“If a parent has a 1-year-old and 7-year-old, we want to give them time to watch both,” said Tammy Dirks of Bi-Coastal Media.

Participants should bring their own Easter baskets or bags.

The entire scramble is over in about 20 minutes.

“It looks like a stampede of children,” Dave Griffith said.

“It gets picked up real quick.”

Griffith noted years ago the eggs and candy were dropped off by helicopter but joked “our insurance company decided that wasn’t the best idea.”

“It was fun to watch an 8-year-old look at the sky with awe,” Griffith said.

Now, Bi-Coastal Media staff put out candy and prize eggs Saturday morning beginning at 8:30.

“The ground is covered,” Dirks said.

“We step on things trying to put more things down.”

She has purchased more prize eggs this year than ever, 150, which includes chocolate bunnies, stuffed animals, bubbles and toys.

A Kidz Dental Zone, Papa Murphy’s, Oregon Trail Games and Party Masters will have additional prize eggs. McDonald’s has donated Happy Meal toys.

The Easter Bunny will be at the hunt with candy and prizes as well as the A Kidz Dental Zone Tooth Fairy with goodie bags for the children.

Columbia Gorge Mortgage Group will distribute free child ID kits.

The scramble will start right at 11 and Dirks encouraged participants to arrive early.

Dufur will also have its Easter egg hunt Saturday at 10 a.m. at the south end of City Park for kids ages 12-and-under.
