“Did you see Sahale’s score?” Mia Byers asked, bursting with excitement.
Byers had just finished her own great vault, but couldn’t stop smiling for teammate Sahale Pfriem, who’d nailed a 9.7 in the event.
The vault runway at the Tiki Tumble meet set the stage for many rewarding moments. Riverside’s level 3 gymnasts increased their running speed, impressing the judges and performing their best vaults of the season so far.
High vault scores weren’t the only high scores of the day for the level 3 team. Their overall tally was 109.68, which earned them first place at the meet.
Several Riverside gymnasts achieved personal bests, including Mia Byers, Bailey Jenkinson and Saige Brennan.
All three athletes claimed all-around champion in their respective levels —Byers in level 3, Jenkinson in level 4 and Brennan in level 5.
Riverside took home 12 first-place awards for individual events.
Event winners were Brooke Awmiller (vault and bars), Mia Byers (bars and beam), Gabbe Haskins (vault and beam), Bailey Jenkinson (bars and floor), Daisy Morales (vault and bars), and Sahale Pfriem (vault and floor).
From the coaches’ point of view, there was an aspect of the meet that was even more meaningful than top placements.
“One gymnast didn’t have a great meet, which happens to everyone at times,” Coach Sarah Smith explained. “But rather than having a pity party, she spent the entire meet encouraging and congratulating her teammates. This means more to me than their gymnastics ability or how they place.”
Smith’s team made her proud in more than one instance.
Gabbe Haskins, after performing her routine on the floor, hurried over to congratulate Bailey Jenkinson, who’d competed before her and scored a whopping 9.55.
Haskins was more excited for her teammate’s success than she was for her own.
When asked how focusing on encouraging her teammates changes things for her, Hope Pipkin answered, “Because, instead of worrying about your scores, you can just have fun with the other teammates and encouraging them to do good.”
The meet at Hillsboro proved to be a day of hard-won improvements, victories and challenges — and a chance to put some good, old-fashioned team-spirit to use.
