It took a year of planning and more than 400 volunteer hours to bring the Oregon Trail Invitational Meet to The Dalles.
“We have a great group of parent-volunteers and committee-heads,” said meet-director Sue Kenyon-Hinatsu.
Their job wasn’t an easy one—and neither was hers.
In addition to a rigorous certification process through USA Gymnastics, including an extensive meet-director exam, Kenyon-Hinatsu spearheaded the efforts of many gymnasts, parents of gymnasts, and former gymnasts and their families to host the meet.
The community rallied in support of the event as well, with St. Mary’s Academy loaning chairs, nearby businesses lending the use of their parking lots, and local photographer Brian Goldfain painting the visuals of the meet.
The collective effort achieved results, not only for the team, but also for their hometown.
Competitors from all over the state congregated in The Dalles on October 8.
In attendance were 180 gymnasts, plus coaches, staff members, judges—and of course, the athletes’ families, many of whom stayed in hotels and ate at local restaurants.
“It’s great exposure for The Dalles,” Kenyon-Hinatsu said. “It’s also a way for our compulsory team to have local people come and watch them, since the rest of their meets are out of town.”
The team did not disappoint its loyal supporters.
The level 4 team shone at the meet, rising to first place.
Three Riverside gymnasts claimed the honor of all-around champion in their age-groups: Marissa Baldy, Gabbe Haskins and Daisy Morales.
Excelling in all four events didn’t come without effort, as Haskins could confirm.
“What I did in the gym was practice as hard as I could, using all the energy I had on every single event, especially on vault and bars, since those are the events I have trouble with,” Haskins said.
Added teammate Sahale Pfriem, “This summer we have been doing, like, strength—and strength has helped me get better, and [so has] lots of practice, and paying attention and listening.”
Pfriem and Hannah Adams earned their first all-around scores of 37 or higher, an impressive feat. Adams also scored 9’s in every event for the first time.
“I did achieve a 37.4, so I was happy about that,” Adams stated.
Other goals were attained at the meet as well.
“I reached my 9.3 goal on floor, and I got my 36—that was one of my goals,” Bailey Jenkinson explained. “I focused on my knees and toes, just keeping those straight, and that improved my scores a lot.”
In addition to the high all-arounds, Riverside had six first-place finishers in individual events: Hannah Adams (vault), Bailey Jenkinson (vault), Daisy Morales (beam), Marissa Baldy (bars and floor), Sydney Stanley (vault and beam), and Gabbe Haskins (bars, beam and floor).
The meet in The Dalles was summed up perfectly by its director.
“It’s a win-win all the way around,” Kenyon-Hinatsu said.
