Now in its second year, the 1k, 3k and 5k Riverhawk Run/Walk has seen its popularity soar with 131 runners signed in for running action last Saturday at Sorosis Park.

Race director Bob Thouvenel liked the numbers he saw from the community.

“It was a really nice morning for a run at Sorosis Park,” Thouvenel said. “We used this as a tune-up for the high school and middle school cross country runners before their first meet.”

The 5k race of 77 harriers had the closest finish of the three runs, as two minutes separated the top-10 athletes.

Gabe Lira won the 5k event with a time of 17 minutes and 53 seconds, besting Luke McLean (18:07) by 14 seconds.

Jony Nelson (18:21), Ezekiel Stelzer (18:31), Michael Lantz (18:43), Ethan Shubert (19:00), John Miller (19:12), Zerin Croover (19:28), Rey Aviluz (19:42) and Bill Burns (20:17) made up the top 10 in the standings.

Wyatt Springer (20:26), Jett Nigut (20:34), Colin Han (20:58), Chase Snodgrass (21:14) and Cory Cameron (21:31) represented the next five finishers.

A lot of those top outputs were put up by The Dalles Cross Country team, giving Thouvenel hope for the regular season.

“The results for the high school runners was very good,” he said. “We had 16 runners with personal-bests over last year’s times. It looks like a good start for hopefully another exciting season.”

In the 3k race, Josh Haynes dominated the field of 52 runners for first place in an impressive 10:45.

Oscar Powell had a time of 12:21, Spencer Coburn was third in 12:55, Dillon Durado went for a 13:08 for fourth and Nick Erickson placed fifth overall with a mark of 13:43.

Conor Blair (13:51), Egan Ziegenhagen 13:52, Paul Kelly (13:59), Vincent Ziegenhagen (14:12), Clay McLeod (14:33), Juliana Wold (14:41), Sydney Mershon (14:41), Augustine Decker, Chloe Cook and Isabella Mills tied for 15th place with final times of 14:55.

Only Gabby Abac and Skyler Coburn participated in the 1k race, as Abac had a mark of 5:13 for first place and Coburn added a 5:27 for second place.

Up next is the 26th annual Hope Walk/Run at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8 at the Kiwanis Pocket Park.

Costs are $12 and $7 for students and comes with a T-shirt.

Prizes, music and refreshments will be featured. Fees are waived for $40 or more in paid pledge.

Pledge sheets are available at Klindt’s Booksellers and at the CAP offices.
